Descrição e Informações Adicionais | This paper sheds light on the controversies surrounding the recent expansion of biofuels in the Amazon and maps out key stakeholders, policies and initiatives. While biodiesel production in Brazil has relied heavily on soybeans, recent initiatives and policies aimed at the Amazon have focused on oil palm (Elaeis guineensis), touting it as a promising new crop for increasing Brazil`s energy independence, recovering degraded lands, reducing GHG emissions and creating jobs. This paper examines the extent to which these initiatives are considered sustainable with regard to social and environmental impacts. We observe how new agroenergy government and research institutions and the newly created biodiesel industry support these initiatives. |
