Descricão e Informacões AdicionaisThe increasing economic stakes in sugarcane and ethanol production gave rise to labor violations by sugarcane-ethanol farmers and industries that were buying up and leasing lands on the agricultural frontier. Oftentimes located at the frontier, in distant places where local workers were scarce but where land was abundant and cheap these businesses attracted successive waves of seasonal migrant workers. Not surprisingly, these migrant laborers were more vulnerable to deceitful middlemen and abusive employers who forced laborers to work without pay and perform dangerous tasks without proper health and safety precautions
