The present work is a synthesis of an exploratory study on virtual communities of practice (CoP) that is part of of a master`s degree dissertation. The objective of this research was to verify, in a sample formed by moderators of virtual CoP in actual operation and by consultants in the area if the thirteen (13) factors gathered in the literature were critical success factors for the establishment and the operation of virtual communities of practice. A questionnaire was elaborated to verify which of the identified factors in the literature were considered critical success factors by the respondents. It was answered by a sample of 43 moderators of virtual communities of practice and consultants in the area. The respondents consisted of people with advanced level of education and practical experience in the CoP area, living in ten countries worldwide. According to the data gathered, twelve (12) factors were found to be critical success factors for the establishment and the operation of virtual CoP. The three most relevant critical success factors in decreasing order of importance were: a) community members` awareness of the community`s main goals; b) community members` awareness of the community`s knowledge domain; c) existence of an atmosphere of trust. |
