Descricão e Informacões AdicionaisThe paper aims to analyze the paradoxes and complexity of current European human rights protection system in the context of international law, attempting to determine whether this system augurs some fundamental transformations in the latter. Human rights protection in Europe is comprised of three competing levels: national constitutions, the European Convention on Human Rights and the European Union. A short characteristics of the ECHR and the EU human rights protection were provided in the paper, with a view to highlight their innovative relations to international law. Their special status entails various paradoxes, which are best exemplified in the accession of the EU to the ECHR. Drawing upon this factual background, more general conclusions concerning possible tendencies of international law transformations were formulated. Finally, the paper presents a new concept of international law, in which hierarchical and coherent system of this law gives way to an ongoing competition of norms of multifarious provenance without an a priori determined hierarchy.
