Descricão e Informacões Adicionais | An attract-and-kill approach based on pellets from soybean or palm stearin fats blended with the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. sensu lato and the aggregation pheromone sordidin (Cosmolure) was tested against thebananaweevil,Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar) (Coleoptera:Curculionidae).TheviabilityofB. bassianaconidia, blendedwithhydrogenatedoiland exposedforupto150 mintoheatingat50 C,wasnotaffectedandtheaggregationpheromonedid not undergo any decomposition. Conidial viability in pellets decreased by 50% after an average of 15.1and 9.1 daysat 25and 40 C, respectively, whenpackaged in polypropylene bags. Activepackaging(hermeticbag+O2/moisture-absorbingsachet)increasedtheshelflivesalmost10and6times at25and40 C,respectively.Inolfactometerbioassays,fatpelletsamendedwithpheromone(sordidin,1%wt/vol)werehighlyattractiveto C. sordidusadultsforupto15 days, afterwhichthepheromone release rate had decreased by about 90% and pellets were no longer attractive. Pellets with pheromoneandconidiawereasattractivetoC. sordidusasbananarhizomes, andconsiderablymore attractive than pieces of pseudostem. In no-choice experiments conducted in boxes, survival of insects exposed to fungus-impregnatedpellets was affectedbyfat type(soybeanfat vs.palmstearin) andbioassay temperature(25vs. 30 C),with results favoringsoybean fat pelletsat thehigher temperature(96.9%ofmortalityafter18 daysandST50of7.7 days). However, mortalitylevelswerelow (21.7%forsoybeanfatpellets)orverylow(1 5%forpalmstearinpellets)inchoiceexperimentscarriedoutat25 Cwhenfungus-impregnatedpelletswereappliedbeforeorafterexposureofpseudostem residues to insects, respectively. The potential of this delivery system to manage C. sordidus populationsandotherinsectpests(includingthosewithcryptichabits)isdiscussed. |
