| Descricão e Informacões Adicionais | Abstract This paper highlights some achievements of the participative elaboration of master plans and other initiatives directed towards a more sustainable urban growth in Latin America in a long-term basis. Focusing the efforts made by some countries - particularly Colombia and Brazil - for improving urban life quality through shared responsibility between government and society, it makes a recognition of causes and points out recent experiences in changing a chaotic urban situation that has social exclusion and environmental degradation, densification and expansion of poor and far located neighborhoods, new axes of middle and upper classes occupation creating empty spaces and underused areas, and precarious occupation of protected areas as its most visible expressions. |
