Descricão e Informacões Adicionais | Women in Latin America have not yet achieved broad, political authority or power in the traditional sense of the term. Instead they have registered specific gains in restricted arenas. They have also managed to promote heightened awareness, among men as well as women, and to advocate some modest policy reforms. They have achieved this success largely through collective organization and mobilization. The Brazilian society has showed an increasing strengthen to overcome social problems and move in the direction of the Millennium Development Goals. In this context, characterized by large and well-developed agricultural, mining, manufacturing, and service sectors, Brazil`s economy outweighs that of all other South American countries and is expanding its presence in world markets. From 2001-03 real wages fell and Brazil`s economy grew, on average only 2.2% per year, as the country absorbed a series of domestic and international economic shocks. Notwithstanding, the Brazilian commitment has revealed that democratic paths have been done in terms of human rights trends, carrying out a national action plan that links poverty alleviation to women?s rights and universal access to reproductive health. Based on these guidelines, it has incorporated Gender and Development (GAD) issues in the Brazilian official agenda, implementing in 2004 the Special Secretariat for Women?s Policies. This reveals the government concerns towards the population development and the necessity of poverty-reduction strategies, establishing also laws and policies to protect women?s and girl?s rights. Many governmental and private institutions have begun to integrate reproductive health services into primary health care, improving facilities, training and expanding access to provide women with better life conditions. |
