Descricão e Informacões AdicionaisUp until the mid-1980s Falkland Islands? economy was very small, being almost entirely reliant on the production of wool for export. During the past 20 years, however, there have been too periods with significant increases in gross domestic product (GDP) . The first period of note followed the 1982 conflict when the Mount Pleasant airbase was opened in 1985. The second expansion in GDP occurred between 1995 and 2000 reflecting the development of the fisheries industry (The Falkland Islands Fisheries Conservation Zone was established in 1987). Throughout the 1990s the Islands experienced population growth from around two thousand to almost three thousand people. This partly contributed to the increase in GDP. The population has remained more or less stable at around three thousand people since 2001. The GDP for 2010 was £142 million at current prices equating to £44,000 per capita. In 2014 the Falklands enjoy an exceptional level of amenities and prosperity and are on the right road to an even more prosperous future provided it was embraced by Islanders. Nevertheless, immigration doors should be opened up as the population is too small, with a revision in the Constitution. The Islands? sovereignty dispute has to come to the fore, at the United Nations, MERCOSUR, and UNASUR, to provide the islanders a better future. Due to the nature of established Mercosur relationships it might not be possible to change official political views of countries in South America they indicated, but agreed in order to progress the issue the answer was in education, in particular via the media. There is a profound economic change happening (in the Falklands), and statistical data show that trade relations have increased during the last years going from US$ 140 million to US$ 1 billion in 2012, presenting an increase in fishing 68%, agriculture 3% and tourism.
