Abstract

One of the most salient trends in the global economy during the past four decades has been the adoption of policy reforms seeking to lower international trade barriers. A large body of work in the international trade literature has investigated the links between import competition and labor market outcomes. The goal of this project is to study the relationship between exposure to trade liberalization and infant health using data from Brazil during the 1983-2015 period. Under the current context of globalization, understanding the behavioral mechanisms that
give rise to the trade-health relationship is important for the development of policies aimed at improving infant welfare and subsequent human capital accumulation. We plan to implement a difference-in-differences empirical strategy exploiting variation induced by the sudden, extensive, and unilateral trade liberalization process that took place during the early 1990s. We will measure the regional exposure to this reform following previous work. Due to the pre-existing differences in the industrial composition of employment across areas, some regions were particularly more exposed to the reform. Areas intensive in industries that experienced the larger tariff-cutts felt in increased proportion this policy change. Our research design will compare infant health outcomes of more- and less-exposed areas before and after the reform.
