Resumo:
In this project, I will consider not only import shocks but also China`s demand shock and will examine the effects of the adoption of new agricultural technology and trade on structural transformation and rural inequality. As a technological change, I will use the adoption of genetically engineered soybean seeds (GE soy). The first commercialization records of the new seed occurred in the United States in 1996. In this country, it was commercialized the Roundup Ready (RR) variety, which is the first generation of GE soy seeds. For 1998 in Brazil, the Comissão Técnica Nacional de Biossegurança (CTNBio) authorized the start of the testing process of GE soy for five years before commercialization. Finally, in 2003, the Brazilian government authorized the planting and commercialization of GE soy seeds. However, since 2001 GE soy seeds from Argentina were detected in Brazil.

Brazil provides an excellent context for a study of the impact of China and the technical change in soybeans on structural transformation and rural inequality because China is one of the most important commercial partners of the country. The importance of China in both the imports and exports of Brazil has risen steeply in recent years, for example, the value of exports to China rose from 2.0% to 18.1% between 2000 and 2017. This increase in exports has been mainly driven by products from the agricultural and extractive sectors. Soybean exports from Brazil to China amounted to 20.31 billion U.S. dollars in 2017, an increase of around forty percent in comparison to the previous year. China is by far the leading destination for Brazilian soybean exports.
